Volkswagen (VW) is currently navigating through challenging negotiations with its unions, transitioning from initially poor discussions to more intense and contentious talks. Workers have criticized the automaker for not clearly outlining its future plans, despite promises of an upcoming strategic overhaul.

Difficult Negotiation Dynamics

In an interview published in the works council’s newspaper, Daniela Cavallo, the head of the works council, revealed that the negotiations, which occur weekly, started off as “abysmal” and have since become “serious, critical, and controversial.” Cavallo emphasized that the discussions are not yet at a negotiation stage but are focused on exchanging numbers, data, and facts to reach a mutual understanding of the key issues.

Volkswagen’s Strategic Confidentiality

A Volkswagen spokesperson commented that the talks are confidential and the company is withholding expectations regarding their outcomes. The spokesperson highlighted the necessity for significant cost reductions to maintain competitiveness in the market.

Developing a Comprehensive Strategy

According to a Q&A document accessible to employees via the company’s intranet and reviewed by Reuters, Volkswagen is formulating a strategy expected to be internally presented by the end of the year. This strategy aims to address crucial elements identified by management, including the integration of artificial intelligence, product development plans, and workforce qualifications.

Focus on Savings and Production Planning

Since early October, Volkswagen management has been holding weekly meetings with worker representatives from each German plant. These sessions involve presenting detailed financial data and operational metrics to identify potential areas for cost-cutting and determine production allocations across different sites.

Separate Wage Negotiations

Discussions regarding wage increases are being handled separately, with the next official round of negotiations scheduled for October 30. However, unions insist that the topics of savings, production plans, and wages must be addressed collectively. They have stated that they will not agree to compromises on individual issues unless a comprehensive solution covering all three areas is achieved.

Potential for Industrial Action

Juergen Mahnkopf, the deputy head of the works council, warned that Volkswagen could face significant disruptions if the company proceeds with unilateral decisions to close plants. He threatened “massive resistance on all fronts and at all levels,” indicating that such actions could severely impact the company’s operations.

High Stakes for Volkswagen

The tensions within Volkswagen are escalating as the possibility of factory closures looms—an unprecedented move for the company in Germany. These potential closures could lead to a standoff with worker representatives, who hold substantial influence as they comprise half of the supervisory board, thereby having a significant say in the company’s strategic decisions.
